If 'project success' is not your key criteria when searching for a suitable project manager, then you need not read any further.

Why do so many projects fail?

Most medium to large-scale construction projects in the UK overrun programmes or budgets. Many also fail to fully meet the Employers expectations in terms of quality/finish.

One of the main causes is that most management consultancies use ‘box-ticking’ quality control systems that can help ensure consistency, but do not necessarily ensure high or good quality results. These systems are preferred by most consultancies, as the level of training, experience and management skill required by the project managers is relatively low - e.g. it is not uncommon for very senior project managers in larger corporate companies to lack even basic academic qualifications in project management. The systems commonly used tend to be fairly inflexible, and as they are developed over time, they become increasingly complex. In many cases this results in the project taking second place to the quality system – in simple terms, staff become heavily burdened with maintaining and conforming to the procedures, and as the procedures aren't there own, or taylored to the project, they find some justification in blaming the procedures whenever anything goes wrong.

Where an organisation uses an inflexible quality system that increases the propensity and incidence of project failure, there is a tendency for project managers to be promoted on the basis of personality or likeability, instead of their ability to ensure project successes - Much management research tells us that managers tend to employ individuals with similar traits to themselves - hence 'average PM skills, but likeable' is not an uncommon description of many highly regarded and highly paid project managers.

Over time, many Employers accept project failure as a norm (Government bodies included) and the extra funding necessary is found. The expenses associated with overrun are absorbed and the team moves on to apply the same methods and techniques on the next project. Companies can justify their success (or failure) by comparing themselves to other companies in their sector – unfortunately (in respect to Project Management Consultancies), the vast majority use similar quality control systems.

What can I expect if OGH manages my project?

  • A saving of up to 50% on management and design fees (if we are responsible for design team selection);
  • A possible saving of up to 15% of contract value through value engineering and value management;
  • Reduced likelihood of project overrun;
  • Reduced likelihood of project overspend;
  • A dedicated project manager that bases his reputation purely on project success and not on who he knows, or which golf club he attends;

How is this achieved?

By drawing on construction, design and management experience, and formal training we will: -

Apply Total Quality Management (TQM) to your project – the quality procedure used will be specifically tailored to the project and designed to control the delivery of the outcomes you require.

The Design Team will be carefully chosen to match the individual nature of the project, and again specifically to help meet the project criteria.

The project will benefit from tried and tested Value Engineering Workshops. Value Management procedures and reviews will be integrated in to the overall strategic project plan.

Make full use of the most appropriate scientific means of project monitoring and risk control.

Considerable added value will occur due to my dedicated hands on approach and determination to maintain project control. Additional value will be added through my broad experience in the construction process – this ranges from physically working on sites through to planning & detailed design, site and quality supervision.

SPP's (Strategic Project Plans)

Carl has produced, and assisted in the production of many SPP's. His skills in this area were further consolidated during his MSc studies where a core requirement was the production of a SPP tailored to meet the requirements of a proposed £60m shopping and leisure facility on a real-life site in Edinburgh. A letter of congratulation was issued by the University (see below).

The SPP is the key project document that sets out how the project will be managed and delivered. The success of the project will rely heavily on the approved plan, so it is essential that someone benefiting from a broad experience base undertakes its production.
